Supporting living marine resource research for world’s important commercial fisheries and nation’s largest marine mammal populations

The Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) is a research branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). It generates the best scientific data to understand, manage, and conserve the region’s living marine resources and environmental quality for Alaska and western U.S. coastal oceans. Approximately 400 staff members conduct field and lab research for this region of nearly 3 million square miles including the North Pacific Ocean and the eastern Bering Sea.

Under the GSA 8(a) STARS contract vehicle, IBSS has been supporting AFSCs mission through IT support for AFSC scientists to compile and analyze databases on fishery, oceanography, marine mammal, and environmental research. These data are utilized in developing policies and strategies for fisheries management within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, monitor marine mammal population health, and implement NOAA NMFS’ ecosystem management approach through predictive methods.

Our employees’ work in system administration maintenance, content management, Oracle support, and enterprise architecture resulted in exercising an additional option year and increased funding from $600K to $1.55M. One of our accomplishments includes implementing the migration from Google Drive to Socrata to ease collaboration among AFSC scientists.

We look forward to continue providing AFSC with innovative solutions to support its mission.
