The National Weather Service’s (NWS) NCEP requires additional Akamai hosted content delivery services for increased web demand capacity to support the IDP National Weather Service Telecommunications Gateway (NWSTG) Re-architecture Project infrastructure. These online content delivery services offload the delivery of web content by copying the data to several sites around the world. By doing this, less capacity is required on the local servers and networks. By removing data from the local servers, content is available close to where it is needed making it more efficient for the end user. Because this is a distributed system, it can also better handle traffic spikes during weather events. There is also an increase in security when using content delivery because of the distribution of data. In the event of a cyber-attack or security breach, the distributed system can handle attack from several locations as opposed to a single or few sites. This increase in web demand capacity will ensure 100% diverse backup to the NWSTG and provide the program the ability to meet peak web demands by users during severe weather. By increasing the volume of satellite, model, and radar data processed at any given time this web demand capacity will allow more callers to retrieve weather information at one time.
