Examining current marine, coastal, and Great Lakes policy issues

Laurie Allen, IBSS’ Director of Science Programs, attended this year’s Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW) at the Ronald Reagan Building on Pennsylvania Avenue. The session themes reflected today’s dialogue, focusing on natural resource management and conservation in an environment under change, a time where new technologies can provide better and faster tools for research and decision making  and where issues like environmental justice and resilient communities are an increasingly large part of the conversation on oceans and coasts.

The provocative topics, from addressing the seafood deficit, building resilient communities and the state of keystone species conservation, stimulated discussion, renewed enthusiasm, and provided something for everyone to learn from. Laurie Allen attended the Ocean Gala that honored several ocean heroes, dedicated to ocean and coastal science and conservation, as demonstrated by an exhaustive list of accomplishments, was truly inspiring. Most of all, CHOW continues to offer an opportunity to network with professionals in all areas of ocean/coastal related applications. We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity next year!
