On Saturday, November 20, more than a dozen volunteers from IBSS’s Silver Spring, MD headquarters joined forces with the D.C. area non-profit Project GiveBack for the 27th Annual Thanksgiving Food Distribution to pack Thanksgiving food donations for families in need.
Project GiveBack organizes volunteers to meet on the Saturday and Sunday before Thanksgiving, calling these days “GiveBack Saturday” and “GiveBack Sunday”, to pack boxes of goodies that are donated to families who would not have been able to afford a Thanksgiving meal without this assistance. This year, Project GiveBack hosted eight (8) distribution sites in the D.C. Metropolitan area.
IBSS Program Manager Nijel Redrick, who happens to be the Treasurer for Project GiveBack, requested that the IBSS Volunteer Committee support Project GiveBack this year by sending volunteers to pack donation boxes. The IBSS Volunteer Committee meets weekly to manage company-organized initiatives. This is the third year that IBSS has organized volunteers to assist with Project GiveBack.
The site where our volunteers met was tasked with packaging 100 boxes. Each box included: a whole chicken, ground turkey, pork sausage, stuffing, pasta, potatoes, yams, apples, an onion, carrots, and celery. Project GiveBack purchases all of these items, using monetary donations that were made to the organization. Due to the rising cost of turkeys, the organization was not able to purchase whole turkeys so recipients received ground turkey instead of a whole turkey.
