Earth Day is this Saturday, April 22nd, and many communities are coordinating cleanup efforts in cities, parks, and beaches all around the world. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, and currently, it is held in more than 193 countries, with around 1 billion people participating globally. This year’s theme is “Invest In Our Planet.”

Every day there are updates and articles about plastics, from our landfills to our waterways and, frighteningly, in our food. The statistics are staggering and don’t appear to be reducing anytime soon. Plastic waste has become the villain terrorizing our planet, including not only our health but also the well-being of all creatures that share this home.

While Earth Day is now in its 53rd year, the negative results continue to rise to epic proportions. In 2021, an estimated 583 BILLION plastic bottles were manufactured, making an increase of 100 BILLION more bottles than only five years ago. Try to visualize what billions and billions of plastic pollution waste look like as it attacks our waterways, our lands, plants, wildlife, and our own well-being. If this isn’t shocking enough, imagine what the next five years will hold if we don’t act now.

What can you do for Earth Day this year to help “Invest In Our Planet?” Will you think twice before you buy that case of individual water bottles for yourself, your kid’s soccer game, or grab that last one from your fridge to take to the beach? EarthDay.org has a variety of suggestions on ways that each of us can contribute to the reduction of disposable plastic consumption. Let’s boldly act in this partnership with our planet to invest in change and create a shift in the next five years that begins to flip the statistics to ensure plastic pollution stops here and now. Invest in our future by investing in our planet. We can make Every Day Earth Day!
