A key partner to NOAA Fisheries, IBSS supports the mobile and web application, database, and at-sea/portside data collection efforts for the NOAA Fisheries’ Observer program. Central to fishery and ecosystem sustainability efforts in the Northeast, the Observer program collects data to further habitat and protected species conservation. Our team promotes critical data exchange across Observer, public, and government systems by developing and maintaining electronic Application Program Interfaces and data collection tools.

Developing a Portside Application has been a major effort for NOAA Fisheries to standardize portside data entry and evaluation by reducing human error related to manual data entry. Our team helped improve workflow and data accuracy for the application’s 300 active users. We enhanced the application by creating more efficient data collection, improved accuracy through seamless input processes, and connecting stored portside sample data with real-time data collection to reduce auditing time. For this team effort across Observer program stakeholders, IBSS was recognized for our part bringing this project to full completion.

A huge shout out [to the team] for developing an Android application, Oracle database, and web-based editing system for a new Portside Sampling program for the herring fishery… The team has created several innovative products that integrate well with current systems while also setting us on the path for improved at-sea and shoreside data collection and data processing. – NEFSC Science and Research Director
